Lowering pipes to clear Givi cases
05/21/14 8:39 PM

I just installed my SW-Motech side racks to hold my Givi V35 side cases and they fit and work perfectly! My only issue is that the bottom of the bags are ¼" or less to the pipe and I need to space the mufflers down to gain some breathing room. I've seen the home made brackets and I am willing to fabricate a set for myself, but before I do is there any place that sells a nicer looking version? (If I do fab a set, is 1/8" flat steel stock sufficient? I'd think so. How far between the holes were the sets guys used on their bikes, 1-¼" roughly ?)

I remember seeing a post a while back that said Muzzy's had a set of stainless steel oval shaped ones that worked perfectly. I called and talked to Rusty, he has never heard of such a thing but is going to check with the shop guys and get back to me hopefully by the end of the week. It's a simple piece...like a double ended washer basically. I called Two Bros (I have their pipes in CF) and they have nothing.

Any ideas?

No experience but I think if you took your time and did it right some strap iron would be just fine and still look good.

I've got plenty of fabrication experience but I hate whipping up a sweet piece of metal and having to just spray bomb it black or whatever. Rattle can makes it look like a hack job, even if my grinding and welding is perfect. I'm just curious if anyone has any leads on some off the shelf ones...like those stainless CNC'd ones I saw on here.

I have the material and tools in the garage...I guess you could call me lazy. If nothing comes up I'll make up a set or two and make them as nice as I can. Maybe out of aluminum I can brush and clear coat? I don't want form or function...I want both!

These pics show the stainless drop brackets Muzzys so graciously included when I ordered a pair of their stainless muffler loops to replace the cheapo plastic ones my Scorpion mufflers came with. I have the originals that I made in plain steel if you would like one or both to copy.

Danno - Thanks for the offer. I actually just fabbed a set from .0625 mild steel. They turned out fine, but I'd still rather have gotten those nice stainless ones. Here are a few photos. For dimensions, I used 1.125" for everything. The radius of the ends, as well as the width, as well as the distance between the two holes. The length is simply twice that, so 2.25" end to end. They fit and work perfectly!

The hardware is all .375"/10mm stainless steel, with stainless Nylock nuts on the back side. Looks and better yet performs the task wonderfully, I had no room before, and after installing these and manually lifting up on the mounting brackets for the saddlebags as I tightened the mounts I've got several inches on each side.

Hope this helps someone else, easy as pie. And yes I could make a set or two if someone is interested, but I'm not making business out of it. I simply have the necessary tools and material on hand.

Cheers,
Logan

Looks good. Now if you can find some stainless stock somewhere ( I have an old hunk of stainless restaurant equipment junk) you can remake them to suit. Muzzys surprised me with the inclusion of stainless drops with the hoops I ordered. Classy way to promote customer relations!

At the request of lawlist on another thread, I'm gonna post a few pics of the finished clearance.

I can take more pics on request, but as you can see there is at least a couple inches room now. It was not only the brackets that helped, but also pulling any extra movement or slack upwards when tightening the mounting points. I'd guess theres about 2.5" minimum gap between them now. Seems perfect, enough room that I'm comfortable not using the heat resistant shielding tape on the bottom of the bags. There is no need, especially with carbon fiber cans that dissipate very little heat. Good idea on finding some stainless steel stock perhaps, but I think I'll use these for a while. They look fine on there, actually very little is visible under the SS washers and hardware. If I were to make another set I could use SS or aluminum even.

I had called Muzzy's twice and talked to Rusty about them, he said he didn't think they existed but he would ask the shop guys. I never heard back so I called again and got Rusty on the line, he said he hadn't forgotten about me (right....) and that he hasn't got the chance to find out yet. This was all last week and I still haven't heard back. Not very good customer support on Muzzy's part. Just because I'm not spending hundreds of dollars on pipes doesn't mean you can blow me off and purposely avoid doing business with a customer who is willing to pay for your product. Something that probably costs them next to nothing to stamp out and mail to me. Ah well...live and learn.

LynBiker - I tried to send you a PM but you need to enable private messaging from other users on your profile.

Alternatively, you can send me an email or text/call my cell we can see what you need for brackets. (I won't post that here, send me a PM). Are you running the Givi V35 side cases on SW-Motech brackets? What type of exhaust? Hard to tell in your avatar, looks like Leo Vince. Any special distance you need to drop them for proper clearance or would my set at 1.125" be enough? I can make them from 1/16" or 1/8" steel stock... Painted or raw, your choice. Let me know. I'm here to help our awesome community!

Another ZX14 rider will soon have some nice breathing room between the Delkovic pipes and Givi side cases. Glad I could help the community. If I had to say, I think yours turned out better than mine! They were also twice as thick, lol. Happy touring!

Cheers
